st. catherine of siena & the sutherland wedding – maria & andrew

Wedding Photography

Maria and Andrew’s St. Catherine of Siena & The Sutherland wedding was definitely a highlight of my year so far. As wedding photographers, we can only hope for three things: great subjects, great locations and great light – all three were available in abundance on this beautiful day.

Throughout the day, it was a joy to just stand back and watch Maria and Andrew interact together and just photograph them as they are. They are so obviously besotted with each other and there were so many tender moments between the two of them, there was really very little direction needed from me for the portrait side of things and we ended up with so many great pictures, it was difficult to cut things down for the sake of a blog post. Everything from the getting ready, through to the ceremony was full of joy and emotion – manna from heaven or a wedding photojournalist. And the reception was a total blast from start to finish – so many great characters tearing up the dance floor thanks to Maria and Andrew’s fab family and friends and the mad DJ skillz of Steve Stowe!

As a side note, it was brilliant to shoot at St. Catherine of Siena again as I hadn’t been there since the new church building was opened a few years back. Even though it’s obviously a modern building, the architecture has a classic, warm feel with high ceilings, arches, and windows providing a lot of beautiful light. And The Sutherland is always a great place to shoot with its old house full of plenty of character and natural light, its outbuildings and gorgeous grounds.

Finally, the light on the day was just beautiful. We were blessed with gorgeous sunny weather from start to finish, which was just the cherry on top. All told, we were truly spoilt!

As always, I want to send out my thanks to the fantastic team that came together to put on such an amazing event. They are:

Ceremony: St. Catherine of Siena, Wake Forest, NC | Reception: The Sutherland, Durham, NC | Planner: Adams & Events, Cary, NC | Dress: Downtown Bridal, Salisbury, MD | Florist: Fresh Affairs, Raleigh, NC | Cake: Ashley Cakes, Raleigh, NC | Bride’s Hair & Make-Up: Wedding Hair by Liz, Raleigh, NC  | DJ: Steve Stowe, Bunn DJ Co, Raleigh, NC | Rentals: Petal & Oak Rentals, Raleigh, NC | Catering: Rocky Top Catering, Raleigh, NC | Lighting: Total Production Services, Raleigh, NC | Transportation: Lifestyle Limousine Company, Raleigh, NC | Videographer: Hayzen’s Productions, Greensboro, NC | Assistant Photographer: Brian Joseph, Apex, NC

And without further ado, here are my picks of the pics:

raleigh wedding photographer – image of the week: no. 12
This is an image that just makes me smile. Capturing moments between loved ones is something I really enjoy doing. I'm not sure if it's because my wife and I live so far away from our families and loved ones back home in England and Panama and we miss them, or if it's just the old romantic in me, but I love watching people interact and have fun together. It's one of the reasons I love what I do.In this case, we can see the bride's mum and granddad sharing a dance and a laugh later on in the reception. No real mystery in how the shot was put together, except by shooting in manual mode and compensating for the darker environment using avail ...

oaks at salem wedding photography – kim & jeff
When Kim originally contacted me in May last year, she hadn't even booked her venue yet, so it was clear photography was a pretty big priority for her. As soon as we spoke, I knew we were on the same wavelength and I was so pleased when she booked me pretty much straight away. Happily, she did select a beautiful venue pretty quickly thereafter! And so it was that a fortnight ago, I took the arduous 6-minute drive from my house to The Oaks at Salem to shoot Kim & Jeff's wedding a couple of weeks ago.We were forecast storms, and it did rain a little in the morning, but I always say to wait and see what happens on the day and we couldn't ...

justin and meredith get hitched
A few weeks back, I mentioned meeting some very close friends of ours, Brad and Jennie, at a monthly gathering of friends who consume lots of raw fish, rice sake and plum wine. On Saturday, Cristel, Charlotte and I attended the wedding of two more "Sushi Club" friends, Justin and Meredith, who tied the knot up the road in Fishers. The official photographer for the day was the marvelously talented Angela Talley, but, as you can guess, I couldn't get through the day without taking some pictures of my own, especially given that is was the first time in ages the original Sushi Club members got together AND Charlotte was wearing a pretty cute froc ...
