Grace & Brett’s Wedding at Saint Mary’s School & Reception at The Maxwell
Some weddings simply fall into place, and Grace and Brett’s did exactly that. A relaxed couple, two strong Raleigh venues, and a day that moved at a natural pace. Their celebration blended the character of Saint Mary’s School with the modern warmth of The Maxwell, creating a straightforward, elegant day from start to finish.
Getting Ready at The Maxwell
The morning began at The Maxwell, where Grace and her entourage got ready in soft window light with plenty of space to breathe. The venue’s clean lines and muted tones always make it an easy environment to work in, and the atmosphere stayed calm and focused throughout — exactly what you want at the start of a wedding day.
Hair, makeup, and the final details all came together without any rush. A steady, comfortable build-up to the ceremony.
Portraits at Saint Mary’s School
Once everyone was ready, we made our way to Saint Mary’s School to meet Brett and the gents for portraits. The campus has a depth of history and a mix of light, architecture, and greenery that lends itself well to straightforward, honest images. No need to overcomplicate anything — the setting does a lot of the work for you.
A Historic Ceremony in Saint Mary’s Chapel
Grace and Brett were married in Saint Mary’s Chapel, a Raleigh landmark dating back to 1855 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s a chapel with real presence: tall windows, warm timber, and that quiet sense of place you only find in a building that’s stood for generations.
The ceremony itself was intimate and grounded. The chapel’s soft, directional light and Gothic Revival details created an atmosphere that needed no embellishment — just careful observation.
Newlywed Portraits Around Smedes Hall
After the ceremony and family portraits, we moved across to Smedes Hall for a short breather and some newlywed images. The interior had been set up for a conference, so the room was full of tables and chairs, but that’s part of the job — using what’s available and framing out what isn’t. A simple doorway became the perfect tool to isolate Grace and Brett and keep the focus exactly where it needed to be.
Smedes Hall sits at the centre of campus overlooking the grove of “stately oaks,” with the Hannah Smith ’12 Quad behind it. Both spaces offer natural, understated backdrops within a few steps. As the late-afternoon light settled across the grounds, we made the most of the warm, directional light for some final portraits before heading back to the trolley.
With their natural chemistry, Grace and Brett slipped into an easy rhythm, which always makes for genuine, unforced images.
Back to The Maxwell to Celebrate
From there, it was back to The Maxwell, where the atmosphere shifted straight into celebration. Strong florals, good music, excellent food, and a lively crowd kept the energy exactly where it needed to be. The Maxwell handles receptions well, and this one was no exception.
The night ended with the sort of relaxed joy you can’t stage — a fitting end to a well-paced, well-planned day.
