raleigh wedding photographer – image of the week: no. 5

Durham Wedding Photographer

Good light: it’s the holy grail for us photographers, so when I saw this red brick warehouse lit up in the orange glow of the setting sun at last Saturday’s wedding in Durham, I immediately suggested to the happy couple that we make the short walk over to take some pictures before the start of their reception. We got there, I showed them where to stand and left them to themselves to interact naturally. The result was this image of the couple and the spontaneous kiss of the groom on his bride’s shoulder.

You can’t pose this kind of image and make it look natural, so the trick is to just find the light, have some fun and let the couple take care of everything else. That’s why I never spend too much time posing my subjects or directing them. I much prefer to see people relaxed and being themselves versus having them worry about doing something that doesn’t come from their own heart. One photo like this is worth countless posed ones as far as I’m concerned!

Have a great 4th of July everyone!

2017 finished in style with Jill & John's fab wedding in Durham NC. Regular readers of the blog will probably remember Jill from her beautiful Rose Hill Plantation bridal session, which was one of my favorite portrait sessions of the year. She made such a stunning bride and was such good fun to be with, I was really looking forward to the wedding day! As a regular Durham wedding photographer, it was great to close out the year at such iconic Durham venues as Immaculate Conception Church, Duke Gardens and the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. Before that, though, and while Erin was photographing John and the guys, I met up with J ...

raleigh durham wedding photographer – the king’s daughters inn
I was honoured to be asked recently by the King's Daughters Inn to provide the photograph for their artwork in this year's Southern Bride and Groom magazine. For those of you that don't know it, the KDI is a beautiful boutique Bed & Breakfast located by the Duke University campus in Durham, NC. It was originally built in the 1920's, but fully refurbished in 2009. It's a place I really enjoy shooting in given its character and abundance of natural light and I can wholeheartedly recommend it for people looking for a more intimate venue for their wedding and other events. I'm looking forward to working with Samantha and the team there ...

Wedding Ceremony: The King's Daughters Inn, Durham, NC Formals: Duke University, Durham, NC Reception: West End Wine Bar, Durham, NC Candis was one of the first brides to contact me after we moved down from Indianapolis last autumn, so I had been looking forward to her and Terrell's wedding for quite a while. The location for the ceremony and dinner was The King's Daughters Inn, which is a beautiful 1920's home located right next door to Duke's East Campus. When I went there to scout out the location I was immediately struck by how beautiful the light was in the house and, with the weather on the day behaving itself, we were really lucky ...
