Durham Wedding Photographer

Good light: it’s the holy grail for us photographers, so when I saw this red brick warehouse lit up in the orange glow of the setting sun at last Saturday’s wedding in Durham, I immediately suggested to the happy couple that we make the short walk over to take some pictures before the start of their reception. We got there, I showed them where to stand and left them to themselves to interact naturally. The result was this image of the couple and the spontaneous kiss of the groom on his bride’s shoulder.

You can’t pose this kind of image and make it look natural, so the trick is to just find the light, have some fun and let the couple take care of everything else. That’s why I never spend too much time posing my subjects or directing them. I much prefer to see people relaxed and being themselves versus having them worry about doing something that doesn’t come from their own heart. One photo like this is worth countless posed ones as far as I’m concerned!

Have a great 4th of July everyone!

The location for the ceremony and dinner was The King's Daughters Inn, which is a beautiful 1920's home located right next door to Duke's East Campus. When I went there to scout out the location I was immediately struck by how beautiful the light was in the house and, with the weather on the day behaving itself, we were really lucky ...

When I'm out shooting, a lot of my time is spent looking around at my environment and trying to work out how to take what I am looking at and make the very best picture of it I can. That may sound pretty obvious, but as someone who has been hired to document a very important day, the temptation a lot of the time is to just take pictures and more pictures to make sure you are covering every single moment possible. You have to make a conscious effort to slow down and take in your surroundings whilst you're working away. This week's image is a case in point about how it can really be rewarding to take a moment to look around and take a few ca ...
