Good light: it’s the holy grail for us photographers, so when I saw this red brick warehouse lit up in the orange glow of the setting sun at last Saturday’s wedding in Durham, I immediately suggested to the happy couple that we make the short walk over to take some pictures before the start of their reception. We got there, I showed them where to stand and left them to themselves to interact naturally. The result was this image of the couple and the spontaneous kiss of the groom on his bride’s shoulder.

You can’t pose this kind of image and make it look natural, so the trick is to just find the light, have some fun and let the couple take care of everything else. That’s why I never spend too much time posing my subjects or directing them. I much prefer to see people relaxed and being themselves versus having them worry about doing something that doesn’t come from their own heart. One photo like this is worth countless posed ones as far as I’m concerned!

Have a great 4th of July everyone!
