raleigh wedding photographer – image of the week: no. 5

Durham Wedding Photographer

Good light: it’s the holy grail for us photographers, so when I saw this red brick warehouse lit up in the orange glow of the setting sun at last Saturday’s wedding in Durham, I immediately suggested to the happy couple that we make the short walk over to take some pictures before the start of their reception. We got there, I showed them where to stand and left them to themselves to interact naturally. The result was this image of the couple and the spontaneous kiss of the groom on his bride’s shoulder.

You can’t pose this kind of image and make it look natural, so the trick is to just find the light, have some fun and let the couple take care of everything else. That’s why I never spend too much time posing my subjects or directing them. I much prefer to see people relaxed and being themselves versus having them worry about doing something that doesn’t come from their own heart. One photo like this is worth countless posed ones as far as I’m concerned!

Have a great 4th of July everyone!

immaculate conception and durham convention center wedding photography ~ sarah and jonathan
Wedding Ceremony: Immaculate Conception Church, Durham, NC Wedding Reception: Durham Convention Center, Durham, NC This was a special one for me as I met the happy couple last year when Sarah was a bridesmaid for her friend Candis at their wedding at the King's Daughters Inn. I think Jonathan's line was "You don't seem to do all the cheesy stuff!". Jonathan, I can verify that this is a fromage-free zone. I really love weddings that have an international flavour and this was the thi ...

duke gardens wedding photography – joyce & ross
Joyce & Ross were married this past weekend, so I'm now able to show some images from our pre-wedding shoot at Duke Gardens a fortnight or so ago. As you'll see, we had a pretty extreme shoot in terms of weather. I think we experienced pretty much all four seasons in the space of a couple of hours, but Joyce and Ross were on great form and didn't let the rain get in the way of their smiles. A good time was had by all, especially me! Here are a few of my faves from the shoot...
