Durham has a character all its own. Historic architecture, leafy gardens, university landmarks & a creative downtown give weddings here a distinctive sense of place. My job is to photograph that character without ever making the photography feel more important than the celebration itself.
For most of the day, I work quietly—watching for reactions, conversations and the unexpected moments that give it personality. When family photographs, portraits or the timeline need a little direction, I’ll step in clearly and efficiently before letting things unfold naturally again.
After more than 300 weddings since 2008, I’ve learned that every celebration has its own rhythm. Whether you’re getting married at Duke Chapel, Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Washington Duke Inn or somewhere completely different, I’ll shape the photography around the day you’re actually planning while making the most of Durham’s architecture, gardens & atmosphere.
Real moments & beautiful portraits
Durham weddings can move between very different settings in a single day. A ceremony beneath the stone arches of Duke University Chapel feels completely different from portraits among the gardens at Sarah P. Duke Gardens or an evening reception at 21c Museum Hotel. Each location has its own light, pace & practical considerations, and knowing when to guide and when to simply observe makes a real difference.
During preparations and the ceremony, I’m watching for the reactions, conversations and fleeting moments that disappear as soon as people become aware of the camera. When portraits or family photographs need a little direction, I’ll step in clearly and efficiently before letting you get back to the people you came to celebrate with.
Durham also gives us a huge amount of variety for portraits, from Duke’s Gothic architecture & gardens to historic buildings, contemporary interiors and the streets around downtown. Some couples want ten or fifteen minutes and a handful of natural photographs. Others enjoy the creative process and want to spend longer making something more distinctive. There isn’t a right amount of time—only what works for you.
My job is to understand what matters most, make the most of the places you’ve chosen & create photographs that feel considered without making the wedding feel like it was organised around photography.

Duke University Chapel
Duke Chapel is one of North Carolina’s most distinctive ceremony settings and one of my favourite places to photograph. Its scale, stonework, arcades & stained glass give us plenty to work with, while the Chapel’s tight schedule makes good preparation especially important.
Sarah P. Duke Gardens
Duke Gardens can host the wedding itself, provide a first look location before a chapel ceremony or become part of an engagement or bridal session. Each part of the gardens has its own visual character, from formal terraces to shaded woodland.
Washington Duke Inn
Washington Duke Inn feels tucked away from the city despite being right beside Duke. The lawns, mature trees & understated architecture give us a completely different backdrop from the Gothic drama of Duke Chapel, while Duke Gardens nearby adds another option for portraits without sending you all over Durham.
21c Museum Hotel
21c Museum Hotel combines Durham’s Art Deco history with contemporary art in a way that feels completely different from a traditional wedding venue. The original bank vault, historic details & galleries give us plenty of character for portraits, while the downtown location adds even more variety just outside the door.
A realistic Durham timeline protects the good bits
Durham weddings often involve fixed ceremony times and a move between Duke, a hotel & a reception. If the day takes us from Duke Chapel to the Gardens, Washington Duke Inn or downtown, we’ll allow realistic time for those transitions and work out where family photographs & portraits fit naturally rather than trying to squeeze them in later.
Before the wedding, I’ll coordinate with you and your planner around the places you’ve chosen, the light we’re likely to have & any firm timings we need to work around. If I’m photographing somewhere new, I’m happy to visit in advance. The aim is to create enough structure that nobody feels rushed, while still leaving room for the day to unfold as it should.

Durham weddings can involve a few moving parts, particularly when the ceremony, portraits & reception happen in different places. Before the day, we’ll work through access, travel, family photographs and the locations that make the most sense for portraits so nothing important is being figured out at the last minute.
On the wedding day, I work alongside an experienced second photographer, which is particularly useful when preparations are happening in different locations or during a structured ceremony such as Duke Chapel. It allows us to photograph the same part of the day from different perspectives without either of us needing to make ourselves the centre of attention. When a little organisation helps, I’ll step in. When it doesn’t, I’ll leave things alone.
Afterwards, every selected photograph is individually hand-finished & delivered through a private online gallery. Albums & hybrid film coverage are available if you’d like something more tangible to go alongside the digital collection.
A smaller wedding can still feel like a complete occasion
A smaller Durham wedding might pair a short ceremony with portraits among the city’s architecture, gardens or art-filled interiors before dinner with the people closest to you. Coverage can follow that shape without pretending the day is a condensed version of a ballroom wedding.
Rather than squeezing a traditional wedding into fewer hours, we’ll shape the photography around the celebration you’re actually planning. Whether you want a handful of natural portraits or time to create something more artistic, I’ll help you find the right balance while keeping the day relaxed, enjoyable and unmistakably yours.

Durham wedding photography collections begin at $4,995, and most couples invest between $7,000 & $8,000. Coverage includes me as lead photographer, an experienced second photographer, carefully hand-finished images, a private online gallery & high-resolution digital files with personal printing rights.
Every wedding is different, so collections can be tailored around the scale, locations & timeline of your celebration rather than fitting every couple into the same package.
