duke gardens engagement session – jacquie and erik

Engagements

Back in November, I got together with Jacquie and Erik for their engagement session at The Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham. It was a gorgeous sunny morning in Durham and we took some time to walk around the gardens and get some pictures with the autumn colours of the garden providing a beautiful backdrop for our images.

Jacquie and Erik are a lovely couple who are both studying together for their PhD at Duke – hence the choice of location. I had a lot of fun with them and I’m very much looking forward to seeing them again for their wedding at Duke Chapel in September. Their reception will also be held in these same gardens, so it’s going to be good to get back here to complete the shoot after they become man and wife!

The Sarah P. Duke gardens are very beautiful indeed at this time of year and so we weren’t the only ones out enjoying the scenery that day. One of the main challenges we faced was to obtain some nice, spontaneous photos that did not have a lot of people milling around in the background enjoying the flowers. We took our time and relaxed and our patience was rewarded with what I think are some really nice photos. Here are just some of my favourites from the day.

durham engagement session – annie & yuriy
Shooting at golden hour is photographer nirvana. Most of the time, that means shooting at sunset, especially in the summer months when sunrise is so early in the morning. Shooting at sunrise in June, though, you get the benefit of cooler temperatures than in the afternoon and the fact most people are still in bed, so places that would otherwise be teeming with people are pretty much empty. So it was great to be able to meet up with Annie & Yuriy early in the morning a week or so back to shoot around Duke Chapel and Sarah P. Duke Gardens, where they will be getting married in a few short months. As you can see below, we pretty much had bot ...

rural nc engagement photography – christina & jerry
A couple of weeks back, I headed down to Christina & Jerry's farm in Broadway, NC for their engagement session. On the way home, I went a different route and drove by fields and fields of beautiful flowers, which were just begging for pictures - so the next day we went back for some more photos! Here are my faves from the 2 shoots. For the photographers out there, these are a mixture of Kodak Portra 800 film and my Kodak Portra 800 presets for Lightroom. Have a great week, y'all!

raleigh engagement photography ~ cassie and john
Hi everyone, At the end of March, I got together with Cassie and John for a walk around downtown Raleigh for their engagement photography session. We met up at The Oxford, had a couple of drinks and headed out into the city to find the light as the sun was setting. As always, I tried to do things a little differently from my previous shoots in the area so we mixed things up a bit by shooting solely with prime lenses. Invariably, the fixed focal length forces you to see things differently and this case was no exception. It makes you think a bit more about your composition, which means more work, but that's definitely a good thing. A goo ...
