st. catherine of siena & the sutherland wedding – maria & andrew

Wedding Photography

Maria and Andrew’s St. Catherine of Siena & The Sutherland wedding was definitely a highlight of my year so far. As wedding photographers, we can only hope for three things: great subjects, great locations and great light – all three were available in abundance on this beautiful day.

Throughout the day, it was a joy to just stand back and watch Maria and Andrew interact together and just photograph them as they are. They are so obviously besotted with each other and there were so many tender moments between the two of them, there was really very little direction needed from me for the portrait side of things and we ended up with so many great pictures, it was difficult to cut things down for the sake of a blog post. Everything from the getting ready, through to the ceremony was full of joy and emotion – manna from heaven or a wedding photojournalist. And the reception was a total blast from start to finish – so many great characters tearing up the dance floor thanks to Maria and Andrew’s fab family and friends and the mad DJ skillz of Steve Stowe!

As a side note, it was brilliant to shoot at St. Catherine of Siena again as I hadn’t been there since the new church building was opened a few years back. Even though it’s obviously a modern building, the architecture has a classic, warm feel with high ceilings, arches, and windows providing a lot of beautiful light. And The Sutherland is always a great place to shoot with its old house full of plenty of character and natural light, its outbuildings and gorgeous grounds.

Finally, the light on the day was just beautiful. We were blessed with gorgeous sunny weather from start to finish, which was just the cherry on top. All told, we were truly spoilt!

As always, I want to send out my thanks to the fantastic team that came together to put on such an amazing event. They are:

raleigh wedding photographer – image of the week: no. 7 | cliff mautner bootcamp review
This week's image is a bit different to the norm as, instead of at a wedding, it was taken at Cliff Mautner's Lighting and Skillset Bootcamp, which I had the pleasure of attending this week. I have always admired Cliff's use of light and been impressed with his communication skills and down-to-earth approach to teaching. For those of you that don't know him, Cliff was voted one of the top 10 wedding photographers in the world by American Photo magazine and is a Nikon spokesperson and multi-award-winning all-round amazing guy. Bottom line, someone I was really looking forward to meeting and learning from. As you can probably tell, I place a ...

borden building raleigh wedding photographer – britne & calebe
Britne and Calebe's wedding was a real coming together of cultures. With Caleb and his family hailing from Brazil, and Britne being from right here in the gold ol' USA, there was definitely a really fun vibe to this wedding. Britne wrote out and learnt her own personal vows in Portuguese, which was a surprise to Caleb and a very touching moment of the ceremony. We were blessed with a perfect sunny spring day for the ceremony outside at the Borden Building in Fred Fletcher Park in downtown Raleigh.  Here are just a few of my faves from their day...

raleigh wedding photographer – image of the week: no. 11
People following this blog will know that I like to try to tell stories with my images and that one of my favourite parts of the day to cover is the preparation time when the bride is getting ready. This week's image shows the bride's mum helping her daughter into her dress, which is always an emotional highlight of the day. Something about putting the dress on makes everything so real and imminent, which can be quite a moment after months of planning and anticipation. Those same people following this blog will know that I am a big fan of keeping out of the way and just letting moments like this happen. The fact that the bride was position ...
