duke gardens engagement session – nikki & john

Engagements

It’s been a while since I shared an engagement session and I’ve shot quite a few over the last few weeks. So let’s put that right! Here’s a Duke Gardens engagement session I photographed a few weeks ago. I’ve known Nikki for a few years through some corporate work I did a few years back with what is now The Pink Ceiling. So I was really pleased when, a few months back, I heard that she’d got engaged to John and wanted me to photograph her wedding for her.

As I always like to do, we met up at a bar for a few drinks to chat and loosen up a bit before heading over to the gardens. I like to make it a natural progression from when we meet to when we start shooting and it always seems to relax everyone before we jump into the photo session.

We got to the gardens around golden hour, so the light was beautiful as always. The gardens are built into a kind of valley so, over the years, I have worked out when the light hits certain areas at the best times. Nikki and John brought a change of clothes so we got to get two looks into the session. I often suggest this, but it’s by no means mandatory. I just want you to feel relaxed and comfortable for the camera!

Anyway, you can see Nikki & John have fabulous chemistry and were a lot of fun to photograph together. I’m really looking forward to their wedding next year!

Here are just some of my faves from the session.

Dear Internets, Being chosen to document a Duke University Chapel wedding is always an honour. Being asked to be the photographer for the wedding of Duke University Chapel's Director of Worship is extremely humbling indeed. In our initial consultation call, Meghan and I both agreed that it's important for there to be a connection of minds. So it was great to spend some tome together with Meghan and Adam ahead of the big day to get to know each other a bit more, have fun and experiment. We met early one Monday morning for a cup of coffee and headed out into the early morning sunshine to take some engagement photos around the gorgeous gro ...

Shooting at golden hour is photographer nirvana. Most of the time, that means shooting at sunset, especially in the summer months when sunrise is so early in the morning. Shooting at sunrise in June, though, you get the benefit of cooler temperatures than in the afternoon and the fact most people are still in bed, so places that would otherwise be teeming with people are pretty much empty. So it was great to be able to meet up with Annie & Yuriy early in the morning a week or so back to shoot around Duke Chapel and Sarah P. Duke Gardens, where they will be getting married in a few short months. As you can see below, we pretty much had bot ...
