Top 10 Tips for a Fun Family Session!

Alright, picture this: your whole family, looking amazing, laughing together, and creating memories that’ll last a lifetime. Sounds pretty great, right? Well, that’s exactly what we’re all about here at Joe Payne Photography!! We’re here to help you capture those special moments that make your family unique. So, whether this is your first time in front of the camera or you’re seasoned pros, we’ve got some fun tips to make your family photo session a total blast!

1. Pick a Place That Feels Like “You”

First things first, let’s talk about where we’re going to snap these awesome pics! Raleigh, Durham & Chapel Hill have got some seriously gorgeous spots – think Umstead Park, Duke Gardens, Coker Arboretum, the countless nature trails in the area, or even your own backyard. We want to find a place that makes you all feel comfy and shows off your family’s personality. Wherever you feel most like yourselves, that’s where the magic happens!

2. Dress to Impress (and Feel Good!)

Now, let’s talk outfits! The key here is to look coordinated without going full-on matching (unless that’s your thing, then rock on!). Think colours that play nice together – maybe soft pastels and neutral tones (greys or blacks work best), or warm earth tones. Try to avoid big logos, prints, tartans, stripes, plaids and other busy patterns. The focus needs to be on you so your clothes should complement versus distract. The most important thing though? Everyone should feel comfortable and confident. When you feel good, you look good – it’s that simple!

3. Timing is Everything (Especially with Kiddos)

We all know that timing can make or break a day, especially with little ones in tow. Let’s work together to find a time that fits your family’s rhythm. Just had lunch and feeling energized? Perfect! Need to work around nap times? We’ve got you covered. And hey, if we can catch that golden sunset light, even better for those gorgeous, glowy photos!

4. Bring Along Some Fun Stuff

Got a family heirloom that means the world to you? Or maybe your little one has a favorite teddy bear they take everywhere? Bring ’em along! These personal touches make your photos uniquely yours. And if you want to get a little silly, we’re all for it – bubbles, anyone?

A family of three joyfully walks through a field of yellow wildflowers, capturing a perfect moment for family photography. The father carries a small child on his back, while the mother walks beside them. They are all smiling, surrounded by lush greenery.

5. Relax and Let the Good Times Roll

Here’s the most important tip of all: just be yourselves and have fun! Some of the best photos happen when you’re not even trying. A spontaneous tickle fight? An impromptu dance party? Those are the moments we live for. So take a deep breath, forget about being “picture perfect,” and just enjoy being together.

6. Let’s Chat and Make a Plan

We want to know what makes your family tick! Before the big day, we’ll have a chat about what you’re hoping for. Want some posed shots for grandma and some candid ones for your holiday card? Let’s do it! The more we know about what you love, the better we can capture your family’s awesome vibe.

7. Kid-Friendly All the Way

Got little ones? We’ve got you covered! Feel free to bring along snacks, favorite toys, or whatever helps them feel at ease. We’ll take breaks when needed and keep things playful. After all, happy kids make for happy photos!

8. Take Care of Yourselves

In the days leading up to our shoot, try to get some good rest and stay hydrated. It’s amazing what a difference it can make in how you feel (and look) on camera. And don’t stress – we’re here to make this easy and fun for everyone!

9. Embrace the Real Moments

Life isn’t perfect, and guess what? Neither are the best family photos! Those little unexpected moments – a kiddo making a silly face or a spontaneous group hug – those are the gold we’re after. So don’t sweat the small stuff. We’re here to capture your family being, well, your family!

10. Furry Family Members Welcome!

Got a four-legged family member? Bring them along! We love including pets in family photos. We’ll make sure to get some shots with them right at the beginning or end of our session. We do recommend not having them there for the entire shoot, though, as experience tells us worrying about their well-being can add unnecessary stress during the session for you. Just have a friend of a family member on-hand to bring them into the shoot at the end or the beginning of our time together.

So there you have it, friends! With these tips in your back pocket, you’re all set for an amazing family photo session. Remember, the goal is to have fun and capture the love that makes your family special. We can’t wait to meet you and create some beautiful memories together. Let’s do this!
