abbi hits 18 months

Portraiture

Back when I got organised and officially kicked off “Joe Payne Photography”, I was really pleased to get an email from Ashley, whose daughter Abbi used to be in the same group at daycare as Charlotte. Abbi recently turned 18 months, so we spent an hour early on Sunday morning walking around Zionsville. It was probably the hottest day I have ever had to work in, but it was a gorgeous morning and Abbi did brilliantly despite the heat. I hope you like the pics!

On Friday last week, I met up with young Maggie and her parents, Terri and Adam for an early-morning shoot at the IMA. The first thing I saw when I looked into the back of the car, were two brilliant blue eyes shining back at me from the car seat. I think my words to Terri were: "Wow! we're going to have some fun with them!". And so we did. Maggie was a really great little baby to photograph: she smiled when asked to and looked at the camera pretty much on demand too. Mum and dad had come well prepared too, with plenty of props and clothes. The rocking chair in the pictures is a family heirloom going back at least three generations. The b ...

I've spoken before about the use of light and it is something I try to focus on with my work, especially during portrait sessions and the times of the day when we have some time to actually go out and "make some pictures". On the wedding day itself, however, time is normally a precious resource and it's not always easy to conjure up nice images out of thin air. There are many factors to work with: light, trying to work out how to make the most of the environment you are in, distractions from the wedding party itself, etc. This week's image is a good example of how just a little bit of legwork and thought can help find a great spot to work wit ...

Monday was a brilliant day for me as I got to follow up a really fun engagement shoot with a family session with my good friends Clay and Emily and their son Evan. The evening's events started off at Hap's Irish Pub, which was really apt as it was there that I first met up with Clay and Emily Bond almost 11 years ago. Clay and I used to work together and when I was shipped in from London with my old work friends Sean Grant (and his wife Jo) and Tracey McNabb, Clay and Emily were the people that set about making us feel welcome and essentially lining up entertainment for us on the weekends. I think one day that October, we watched a football m ...
