unc chapel hill engagement session ~ thelsa and phil

Engagements

Last Saturday, I met up with Thelsa and Phil at Top of the Hill in downtown Chapel Hill for their engagement session. We had a couple of drinks and a chat, before heading off to the UNC campus for pictures around the gorgeous campus grounds there. We went for a relaxed stroll and took some shots by the Old Well and around Coker Aboretum. Both Thelsa and Phil have ties to the school, so it was the ideal location for their shoot.

It was a really lovely day so we had a brilliant time making the most of the beautiful light in the late afternoon. Thelsa and Phil are a fantastic couple with a great sense of humour and I’m really looking forward to their wedding in June. With such an international flavor, it’s going to be a joy to shoot.

Anyway, back to the engagement photography; these are a few of my favorites from the shoot:

Geek info: Canon EOS 5D Mark III with EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM, EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM and EF 135mm f/2 L USM, and Canon EOS 5D Mark II with EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM

Well, spring seemed to take an age to show up properly, but a couple of weekends back, we were treated to a really beautiful Saturday evening. As luck would have it, I had a UNC engagement photography session set up for that evening, so I loaded up and headed out to Chapel Hill to meet up with Eleanna and Michael. After a couple of beers at Top of the Hill to relax and get to know each other a little more, we went for a walk around the UNC campus and made some images. We shot a mixture of film (Fuji 400 processed by Richard Photo Lab) as well as digital, and the beautiful spring colours really popped in the evening light. All digital images w ...

A couple of weekends back, I got to spend a few hours in the company of these two lovely people as we took a stroll around the Sarah P. Duke Gardens and West Campus at Duke. It was a pretty warm day and the gardens were slammed with multiple weddings and prom-goers having their photos taken. We did our best to slip the crowds and find our own little areas for some privacy and room to shoot and experiment in. Margo & Patrick were great fun and I'm really looking forward to their Duke Chapel wedding in a couple of months. We took a lot of great pics and it was hard to narrow if down, but here are just a few of my faves from the shoot... ...

Hi everyone, At the end of March, I got together with Cassie and John for a walk around downtown Raleigh for their engagement photography session. We met up at The Oxford, had a couple of drinks and headed out into the city to find the light as the sun was setting. As always, I tried to do things a little differently from my previous shoots in the area so we mixed things up a bit by shooting solely with prime lenses. Invariably, the fixed focal length forces you to see things differently and this case was no exception. It makes you think a bit more about your composition, which means more work, but that's definitely a good thing. A goo ...
