unc chapel hill engagement session ~ thelsa and phil

Engagements

Last Saturday, I met up with Thelsa and Phil at Top of the Hill in downtown Chapel Hill for their engagement session. We had a couple of drinks and a chat, before heading off to the UNC campus for pictures around the gorgeous campus grounds there. We went for a relaxed stroll and took some shots by the Old Well and around Coker Aboretum. Both Thelsa and Phil have ties to the school, so it was the ideal location for their shoot.

It was a really lovely day so we had a brilliant time making the most of the beautiful light in the late afternoon. Thelsa and Phil are a fantastic couple with a great sense of humour and I’m really looking forward to their wedding in June. With such an international flavor, it’s going to be a joy to shoot.

Anyway, back to the engagement photography; these are a few of my favorites from the shoot:

Geek info: Canon EOS 5D Mark III with EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM, EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM and EF 135mm f/2 L USM, and Canon EOS 5D Mark II with EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM

When I first spoke with Monica back in early February, one of the first things we chatted about was the fact that she wanted to do an engagement photo shoot, but that she thought her fiancé Mark wasn't too keen on the idea. I knew exactly what she meant as the idea of 'staged' poses is enough to send a lot of people, myself included, running for the hills. As any of you that follow this blog will know, my wedding photographs really focus on a reportage style; telling the story of the day with minimal direction from me. Simply put, I believe the day is unique and it is my job to document it rather than try and make it into something it isn't b ...

duke gardens engagement session – jacquie and erik
Back in November, I got together with Jacquie and Erik for their engagement session at The Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham. It was a gorgeous sunny morning in Durham and we took some time to walk around the gardens and get some pictures with the autumn colours of the garden providing a beautiful backdrop for our images. Jacquie and Erik are a lovely couple who are both studying together for their PhD at Duke - hence the choice of location. I had a lot of fun with them and I'm very much looking forward to seeing them again for their wedding at Duke Chapel in September. Their reception will also be held in these same gardens, so it's going t ...

Rain Stops Play - Well, actually it was the catalyst for a really fun (and different) engagement shoot with Melanie and Anthony. We met up at West End Wine Bar in Durham and were on our way out when the heavens opened and a summer rainstorm was suddenly unleashed upon us. It was a total downpour, so we headed back inside. The original plan was to wait it out, but as the rain never looked like letting up, we switched gears and started using the environment we were in for some portraits. Melanie and Anthony had originally wanted a vintage Hollywood vibe for their engagement session anyway, so we walked to some of the cool spots in downtown Durh ...
