Surprise Proposal Photography in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill & Beyond

So, you’ve got the ring.

Now you just have to work out where to propose, when to do it, how to get them there without raising suspicion, where you should stand, what happens if someone is sitting exactly where you planned to propose… and somehow act completely normal through all of this.

No pressure.

The good news is, I can help with pretty much everything except asking the actual question.

I photograph surprise proposals throughout Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and across North Carolina. We’ll plan things together beforehand so that when the day arrives, you know exactly where you’re going and what you’re doing — and I know exactly where I need to be without your partner having any idea who I am.

You concentrate on the important bit. I’ll worry about the photographs.

There’s a Little More to It Than Hiding in a Bush

A great proposal photograph starts well before you get down on one knee.

We’ll talk through what you have planned, choose the right location and work out exactly where you need to be. I’ll figure out where I can photograph you without making myself obvious, what the light will be doing and what our backup plan is if something unexpected happens.

If it helps, I’m also happy to meet you at the location beforehand and walk through everything in person. I regularly scout locations for proposals and check practical things such as crowds, access, light and whether photography permits are required.

There are enough nerves involved in proposing to someone. Wondering whether your photographer is actually in the right place shouldn’t be one of them.

And when the moment comes, don’t look for me.

Seriously. Pretend I don’t exist.

The Big Moment

When you arrive, I’ll already be in position.

I’ll photograph the proposal itself discreetly — the moment you ask, the reaction, the ring and all the hugs, laughter, tears and slightly stunned expressions that tend to happen immediately afterwards.

Those first few minutes are usually my favourite part. Nobody is thinking about the camera yet, so everything is completely real.

Once you’ve both had a chance to realise what just happened, I’ll come over, say hello and we can relax.

The difficult bit is over.

Then We’ll Take Some Lovely Photos of the Two of You

Once the surprise is out of the bag, we’ll use the rest of the session to make some portraits.

Usually that means taking a walk together and stopping at a few great locations along the way. I’ll give you enough direction that you never have to wonder what you’re supposed to be doing, but I’m not interested in turning the next half hour into an elaborate posing exercise.

You’ve just got engaged. You’ll probably be pretty happy about it.

That tends to photograph rather well all by itself.

The result is a gallery that gives you both sides of the experience: the completely unscripted proposal itself and some beautiful, relaxed photographs of the two of you afterwards.

Proposing at Duke Gardens?

Sarah P. Duke Gardens is by far the most popular place I’m asked to photograph proposals, and for good reason. It’s beautiful, there are loads of different settings within a relatively small area, and it looks great throughout much of the year.

I’ve photographed many proposals and engagement sessions there, so I know the gardens extremely well.

That experience matters more than you might think. The prettiest-looking location isn’t necessarily the best place for a surprise proposal. We have to think about the light, crowds, where you’ll approach from, where I’ll be able to stand without looking suspicious and whether I can actually see both of you when you get down on one knee.

I’ll help you choose the spot and plan exactly how we’ll make it work.

Duke Gardens also requires a professional photography permit. I’ll arrange that directly with the gardens and the applicable permit fee is included in my proposal session price, so that’s one less thing for you to worry about.

And if you’d feel better walking through everything beforehand, we can do that too. I’ve met plenty of nervous proposers at the gardens ahead of time to show them exactly where to go and where I’ll be.

Trust me, you’re not the first person who’s been nervous about this.

Have Somewhere Else in Mind?

Absolutely.

Duke Gardens may be my most popular proposal location, but the best place to propose is really wherever makes sense for the two of you.

I’ve photographed proposals in downtown Raleigh and other locations around the Triangle, and I’m happy to travel further afield. I’ve also helped clients plan proposals at places such as Pinehurst and Fearrington Village.

It could be a city street, garden, golf course, university campus, restaurant, park or somewhere that has absolutely no significance to anyone else but means everything to the two of you.

If you’ve already picked the location, we’ll figure out the best way to make it work.

If you haven’t, tell me a little about the two of you and what you’re imagining. I can help you come up with ideas.

I’ll also check the boring-but-important stuff, including whether professional photography is permitted and whether we need to arrange permission beforehand. Sometimes a location that sounds simple turns out to have its own rules, so it’s much better to discover that before the day rather than while you’re standing there with a ring in your pocket.

What Does Proposal Photography Cost?

Proposal photography starts at $995 for up to one hour, and the standard session includes:

Planning with me beforehand
Help choosing the location, timing and exact proposal spot
Location scouting or a walkthrough beforehand when needed
Checking photography and permit requirements
Discreet photography of the proposal itself
Portrait photography afterwards
A private online gallery
A download of the full gallery of my hand-finished, high-resolution photographs
A print release
The applicable Duke Gardens professional photography permit when photographing there — which I’ll arrange for you

There’s no arbitrary limit of 10 or 20 photographs. This is a pretty important moment. I want you to have the whole story.

And if you have something more elaborate in mind, we can do that too.

I can put together more bespoke proposal packages with additional photography time, multiple locations or film and digital photography. So if your plan involves more than turning up, asking the question and taking some portraits afterwards, tell me what you’re thinking and we’ll build the coverage around it.
