raleigh portrait photographer – jackie’s maternity session

Portraiture

One of the best things about my job is being there with my clients to document the story of their family as it grows in the years after the wedding. Just over two years ago, I shot Jackie & Rob’s engagement session, followed by Jackie’s bridal session in January of 2016 and their gorgeous wedding photographs the month after that. So I was really thrilled when Jackie and Rob reached out to me to let me know they are expecting their first child and I was looking forward to seeing them again for their portrait session celebrating Jackie’s maternity a few weeks ago. We started out by taking a relaxed stroll around JC Raulston arboretum before heading back to catch the last remnants of sunset in the fall foliage outside their beautiful new home a few miles away. Cristel and I are looking forward to seeing them again here in a few weeks and meeting the new addition to the family when Cristel takes care of their newborn baby photography!

Here are just a few favourites from our fab session. I know Rob and I are biased, but doesn’t Jackie look absolutely stunning!??

I've spoken before about the use of light and it is something I try to focus on with my work, especially during portrait sessions and the times of the day when we have some time to actually go out and "make some pictures". On the wedding day itself, however, time is normally a precious resource and it's not always easy to conjure up nice images out of thin air. There are many factors to work with: light, trying to work out how to make the most of the environment you are in, distractions from the wedding party itself, etc. This week's image is a good example of how just a little bit of legwork and thought can help find a great spot to work wit ...

Last week, I headed over to UNC in Chapel Hill to shoot some UNC Chapel Hill graduation photographer portraits for Lauren, who has just graduated with a degree in Business and Dramatic Art. We started off at the Old Well where we took some traditional graduation portraits, before heading for a walk around campus looking for interesting light and areas to shoot some more experimental/dramatic stuff. Here are just a few of my faves from the shoot.

On Friday last week, I met up with young Maggie and her parents, Terri and Adam for an early-morning shoot at the IMA. The first thing I saw when I looked into the back of the car, were two brilliant blue eyes shining back at me from the car seat. I think my words to Terri were: "Wow! we're going to have some fun with them!". And so we did. Maggie was a really great little baby to photograph: she smiled when asked to and looked at the camera pretty much on demand too. Mum and dad had come well prepared too, with plenty of props and clothes. The rocking chair in the pictures is a family heirloom going back at least three generations. The b ...
