Cat and Wyn’s beautiful late-May wedding at The Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill somehow managed to be all three—timeless, elegant, and wonderfully relaxed.

From quiet moments during their first look to one of the liveliest receptions I’ve photographed in a while, their day was full of genuine emotion, beautiful light, thoughtful details and a group of 86 family and friends who clearly understood the assignment when it came to celebrating.

A Quiet Start to the Day

The morning began exactly as you’d hope. Excited nerves, plenty of laughter and an effortless feel from beginning to end as Cat prepared for the day ahead.

Before guests arrived, Cat and Wyn chose to see each other privately for a relaxed first look around the grounds of The Carolina Inn. Away from everyone else, they gave themselves a few precious minutes to slow everything down before the day gathered pace.

Wyn’s reaction when he turned around said everything.

No posing. No prompting. Just one of those moments that reminds me why documentary photography will always mean more than manufactured emotion.

An Outdoor Ceremony in Bryan Courtyard

The ceremony took place in the historic Bryan Courtyard, framed by colourful florals designed by Randy McManus Designs. The arrangements felt as though they belonged there, complementing the grand surroundings while keeping the space feeling intimate.

Adding to the atmosphere was the beautiful live music from Arioso Strings, whose music accompanied guests as they arrived before providing the soundtrack to the ceremony itself.

One of the most touching moments came when both mothers gave readings during the ceremony, adding an especially personal touch before Cat and Wyn exchanged vows.

Cat and Wyn exchanged vows surrounded by the people who matter most, shared their first kiss as husband and wife and walked back down the aisle looking every bit as relieved as they were happy.

Portraits Around The Carolina Inn

One of the reasons I enjoy photographing weddings at The Carolina Inn is the variety of backdrops within just a few minutes’ walk.

The elegant brick pathways, mature gardens, iconic white columns and classic Southern architecture all work together without feeling overdone. We never have to disappear for an hour in search of photographs because everything is right there.

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktail hour while we finished family photographs and made the most of the beautiful grounds before everyone moved into the Old Well Room.

Cat and Wyn were wonderfully relaxed together, which meant the photographs never felt forced. My favourite images are usually the ones between the poses anyway—the laughter after the laugh, the glance when nobody thinks I’m taking a picture, the tiny moments couples don’t even realise happened until they see them later.

Those are the photographs that seem to mean more with every passing year.

A Reception That Didn’t Hold Back

Inside the Old Well Room, the reception struck a perfect balance between refined and relaxed.

Heartfelt parent dances, warm welcomes and a delicious dinner created a space that felt refined without losing any of the joyful character of the day.

The planning by Harmony Weddings & Events brought everything together seamlessly, while delicious creations from Sugar Euphoria added the perfect sweet touch to the evening.

After a lovely first dance, it didn’t take long before the evening shifted gears.

And what a party it became.

Credit also has to go to Hot Sauce—who read the room perfectly from start to finish. Filling a dance floor isn’t easy. Keeping it full all night is even harder.

This crowd needed very little encouragement. From grandparents dancing alongside college friends to an impromptu performance on an illuminated keytar, everyone threw themselves into the celebration.

One of my favourite things about photographing receptions is embracing the energy rather than trying to tame it. Slow shutter speeds, creative lighting and just enough controlled chaos help create photographs that feel exactly like the dance floor did, rather than simply documenting what it looked like.

Twenty years from now, those photographs will bring back the feeling of the night far more than another perfectly straight photograph of people standing in a circle.
