A couple of days back, I met up with Akiko and Jordan bright and early at Jack Sprat's coffee shop in downtown Chapel Hill. We met up early to avoid the heat and get the best light, and after a double espresso and a chat, I was ready to rock n' roll. Akiko and Jordan were a really fun couple to work with and their chemistry really showed when they got together in front of the camera. Both UNC alumni, the locations around the grounds of the campus had special meaning to them, but it is a really fabulous place to shoot given the beautiful architecture and lush greenery everywhere. As always with my engagement shoots, we took things slow ... READ MORE

Wedding Ceremony: Immaculate Conception Church, Durham, NC Wedding Reception: Durham Convention Center, Durham, NC This was a special one for me as I met the happy couple last year when Sarah was a bridesmaid for her friend Candis at their wedding at the King's Daughters Inn. We got on really well and, when I was introduced to her fiancé Jonathan later in the evening, they asked me then and there about shooting their wedding. I think Jonathan's line was "You don't seem to do all the cheesy stuff!". Jonathan, I can verify that this is a fromage-free zone. I really love weddings that have an international flavour and this was the thi ... READ MORE

It's been such a busy wedding season so far, I've barely had time to catch breath, let alone blog. I've been meaning to update this series for a while, but a lot hard been going on with work and our move to a new house, etc. Luckily, we're all settled in now and so I've had some time to go back and look through some of my images to choose a few favorites in order to get things back on track. This week's photo comes from a wedding I shot at Lake Lure in the mountains of North Carolina back in April. As with the majority of my work, this was totally unposed or unplanned. The bride and her bridesmaid were simply waiting for their cue to begin ... READ MORE

Thelsa and Phil are a great couple who were really fun to work with. We'd already hit it off really well in the engagement session so I was genuinely looking forward to sharing with them on their big day. The ceremony itself was a Roman Catholic mass which also included a number of hindustani traditions such as the groom covering the bride ... READ MORE

Wedding and Reception: Magnolia Manor Plantation Bed & Breakfast, Warrenton, NC Disc Jockey and Master of Ceremonies: All Around Raleigh DJ, Raleigh, NC Balloon Décor: Twisted Entertainers, Asheboro, NC Earlier this month, I was lucky enough to photograph Dayna and Daniel's wedding at Magnolia Manor in Warrenton, North Carolina. Set in the North Carolina Piedmont countryside, and with a history stretching back to 1859, it is a truly fantastic location oozing with character and ambience. From the moment I saw the house nestled in its 13 acres of green pasture and pecan groves, I knew I was in for a treat. Sheila and Larry, the ... READ MORE

Wedding and reception: The 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa, Lake Lure, NC Florist: Brown's Floral Design & Interiors, Asheville, NC Cake: Tiffany's Baking Company, Asheville, NC My first wedding of 2012 and what a way to start off the new season. This wedding had it all: a gorgeous venue in a fantastic, picturesque location and an amazing couple in Shannon and Paul. First of all, the Lake Lure Inn was such a great place to work. It was my first real trip up into the North Carolina mountains, so I was amazed at the beauty of the scenery and the Inn itself has such an fantastic amount of character with its 1920's décor. Last Saturday, I met up with Thelsa and Phil at Top of the Hill in downtown Chapel Hill for their engagement session. We had a couple of drinks and a chat, before heading off to the UNC campus for pictures around the gorgeous campus grounds there. We went for a relaxed stroll and took some shots by the Old Well and around Coker Aboretum. Both Thelsa and Phil have ties to the school, so it was the ideal location for their shoot. It was a really lovely day so we had a brilliant time making the most of the beautiful light in the late afternoon. Thelsa and Phil are a fantastic couple with a great sense of humour and I'm really looking forward ... READ MORE

A week or so ago, I spent a couple of hours on a Saturday evening hanging out with Lisa and Mark in downtown Raleigh for their engagement session. We had a couple of drinks in The Oxford (I need to keep it real and English) to catch up and loosen up a little before heading out for a walk around Fayetteville Street. It really is a great area with a lot of unique nooks and crannies to take pictures in, as well as the lovely State Capitol building, which provided the backdrop to some of our images. After a pretty crappy day of rain and thunder, we were treated to a lovely spring evening of sunshine. That, combined with Lisa and Mark's chemis ... READ MORE

One great thing about the lull before wedding season kicks off in earnest here in the next few weeks is the opportunity it provides me to go back and review my images from the past year. In this case, I was looking for an image to enter into the quarterly photo competition with the Wedding Photographic Society. The theme in question was Transportation, and I was immediately reminded of this image I took last October at the Greystone Inn in Durham. In it, we can see the bride arriving at the reception in a 1928 Essex Super Six Coach (provided by the good people at Classy Transportation). It was a pretty difficult shot to pull off technical ... This week's photograph is taken from a wedding I did last year at the Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club in Durham, NC. It was taken in the bride's hotel room while she was having the final touches of her make-up applied. As I have mentioned in earlier posts, I very much enjoy this part of the day as it is invariably a moment of great anticipation for the bride and her cortège. There's normally pretty heady mixture of happiness and laughter in the air, but there are a lot of other feelings running their course too: expectation, trepidation and, often, a few butterflies. With such a wealth of emotions on show, it's a great time to take some pre ... READ MORE

The first dance between a man and wife is a very touching moment indeed to document. It is a time of intense intimacy played out in a public setting, which always evokes a lot of emotion between the newlyweds. It is at times like these that the style of the photographer comes to the forefront and dictates a lot about how the bride and groom (and their guests) will remember their wedding day. Some photographers choose to get very close to the bride and groom with on-camera flash going off every few seconds even going so far as to stop the dance to have the bride and groom stop to look down the lens with a cheesy grin - I have seen this happen ... The bridal session is a very Southern tradition indeed, but one I do enjoy, even as an Englishman! Whether it be a separate shoot as part of a dress-rehearsal for the bride, or some time taken on the adding day itself, it's really nice to take some time with the bride to get some pictures of her in her wedding dress. The shot above was actually taken at a recent wedding in Cincinnati between the wedding ceremony and reception. We had about 5 minutes during the cocktail hour to take some photos of the bride, which isn't much, but that is sometimes all we get to work with. As you can see though, the autumn colours combined really well with t ... READ MORE

Sometimes the simplest of images contain a lot of hidden depth and this is a photo I found myself looking back on and enjoying more each time. From the composition drawing on the beautiful architecture of Raleigh's Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, to the priest and deacon making their way from the altar, the congregation breaking file to take in the proceedings, the leading lines of the aisle and the furtive glance of the groom to the camera bring together a lovely moment into a really nice story-telling image. Many churches are quite specific with regard to providing instructions as to where the photographer can and cannot wor ... READ MORE

Back in November, I got together with Jacquie and Erik for their engagement session at The Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham. It was a gorgeous sunny morning in Durham and we took some time to walk around the gardens and get some pictures with the autumn colours of the garden providing a beautiful backdrop for our images. Jacquie and Erik are a lovely couple who are both studying together for their PhD at Duke - hence the choice of location. I had a lot of fun with them and I'm very much looking forward to seeing them again for their wedding at Duke Chapel in September. Their reception will also be held in these same gardens, so it's going t ... READ MORE

I was honoured to be asked recently by the King's Daughters Inn to provide the photograph for their artwork in this year's Southern Bride and Groom magazine. For those of you that don't know it, the KDI is a beautiful boutique Bed & Breakfast located by the Duke University campus in Durham, NC. It was originally built in the 1920's, but fully refurbished in 2009. It's a place I really enjoy shooting in given its character and abundance of natural light and I can wholeheartedly recommend it for people looking for a more intimate venue for their wedding and other events. I'm looking forward to working with Samantha and the team there ... READ MORE

Those of you that follow my page on Facebook may be aware of the fact that I was the recipient of two important awards over the course of the last couple of months. First, I received word back in late November that Joe Payne Photography had received The Knot's "2012 Pick - Best of Weddings" award; that was followed up this week with news from Wedding Wire that we'd been awarded the "Bride's Choice Award 2012". To say I'm really excited to receive these awards is an understatement. They really mean a lot to me as they are chosen based on feedback from my clients. Only a select few make the cut and I am definitely honoured to be among them. ... READ MORE

This is a favourite moment of mine from a recent wedding. Watching the interaction between a father and son on a wedding day is something that never fails to move me. Having grown up without having my dad around, these are just some of the special moments that I like to watch unfold and capture for the groom and his family. Unsurprisingly, a good part of my time on wedding days is spent watching people interact and looking for those defining moments to document for the couple. My main way of working at this time is to ditch a lot of the equipment that shouts "photographer!" so I can pass relatively unnoticed and catch people being themsel ... READ MORE

I recently had the pleasure of photographing Martie and John's wedding at Brier Creek Country Club. The bridal session took place in mid-September on an unseasonably cold day. I've spoken before about the use of light and it is something I try to focus on with my work, especially during portrait sessions and the times of the day when we have some time to actually go out and "make some pictures". On the wedding day itself, however, time is normally a precious resource and it's not always easy to conjure up nice images out of thin air. There are many factors to work with: light, trying to work out how to make the most of the environment you are in, distractions from the wedding party itself, etc. This week's image is a good example of how just a little bit of legwork and thought can help find a great spot to work wit ...
