The night before last, I was extremely honoured to receive the "2013 Best of NACE Award" for "Best Photography" at the Triangle NACE Annual Awards Gala at the Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club in Durham, NC.
NACE is a fantastic organization with the mission of developing professionals in the wedding and event industry. As such, this particular award meant a lot to me on a couple of levels: firstly, given the number of wedding photographers involved in our chapter at both the membership and board level it was judged by another chapter who didn't know anything about who we were, and, secondly, I was up against a number of other very well-est ...
Getting the opportunity to do a Raleigh portrait photography session in the snow is not something that comes along every day. As such, when I got the chance to head out into the wintry twilight with Sonia last week, I jumped at the chance.
Everything came together very quickly, but the basic remit we set ourselves was to go outside, take some photos, try and experiment a little and push ourselves to do something a bit different whilst having some fun.
I'm really pleased with how the images came out and have to say a special thanks to Ashley of Radiant Beauty by Ashley for her gorgeous make-up work and to April of The Oaks at Salem for h ...
Early on Christmas Eve, I met up with Jordan and Matt for coffee and a chat before heading out into the cold, sunny winter air for some Duke University engagement photography shenanigans around the Duke campus.
Despite the frosty temperatures, it was a lovely day for shooting. The grounds were deserted and the light was gorgeous, so we took our time to explore and find some places to have fun, experiment and get some cool shots.
Jordan and Matt were a fab couple to hang out with and I am really looking forward to their Duke Chapel wedding later in the summer!
Here are my picks of the pics.
I was honoured to be recently awarded first and fourth place in the Wedding and Portrait Society's annual Portrait Palooza competition. "What the heck is Portrait Palooza?" you say. Well, here's the scoop from the WPS themselves:
For those of you who don't know, Portrait Palooza is a fun, annual event created by the WPS as a challenge for professional photographers. Here's how it works: the WPS secures a gorgeous local venue, wedding gowns, lovely bouquets, talented hair and make-up artists, and, of course, BEAUTIFUL brides . . . and then, invites WPS member photographers to come out and photograph them all. BUT -- there is a catch -- as a ...
A couple of Sundays ago, I got up early headed over to Durham for a Duke Chapel engagement photography session with Brianna and Chris, whose wedding I will be documenting at Duke Chapel next summer. Given they live in the DC area, we hadn't had the chance to meet in person yet, so we got together for a cup of hot chocolate at the amazing Cocoa Cinnamon and headed on over to Duke to get some pictures in the early morning light. These are just a few of my faves from the session.

I'm looking forward to shooting Lindsey and Michael's wedding this coming weekend. I thought it might be a good time to share a few of my faves from their recent Raleigh engagement photography session. For those that are interested, the session took place at the North Carolina Museum of Art and Yates Mill County Park in Raleigh.
... and so began my essay every September after getting back from the 6 week summer break. How wasted was that amount of time on us back then?
Anyway, this past week I spent 72 hours up in the North Carolina mountains getting my third eye squeegeed quite cleanly by none other than Parker J Pfister Esq. and his "Not the same old sh*t" workshop. For those in the crowd who are unfamiliar with Parker's work, he was rated one of American Photo Magazine's top 10 wedding photographers in the world a couple of years ago and is an all round amazing visionary and top geezer.
I won't ruin the surprise of the workshop for future attendees, but, suf ...

OK, I have to apologise in advance for the length of this blog post in terms of sheer number of wedding photographs. I normally aim to keep the image count around 50 or so, but this wedding had so many great moments that I really had a tough time choosing my favourite photos to blog. Also, Deniz is from Turkey, so ...

Following on from last week's post of Claire's bridal session, I am really pleased to be able to share the images from Zach and Claire's wedding at Duke Chapel and the Doris Duke Center in Durham. This was a really fun one to shoot, but ...
Claire and Zach got spliced back in early June and I'm looking forward to sharing some photos of their big day very soon. What a top day that was!!
Claire lives out of town so one evening a couple of days before the wedding, we got together at Duke Chapel to take some portraits of her in her dress. As you can see, the weather, combined with the beautiful gothic architecture of the chapel made it a perfect evening for some moody and dramatic images.
Here is a quick selection of a few of my faves. Thanks to Claire for being so game and to Katie for being my little helper!
A full blog post of the wedding will be coming soon!!!

As a father of two young daughters, I can only imagine the mixture of feelings that I will go through on their wedding days. It truly must be one of the most bittersweet moments anyone must experience: the joy of seeing them start out on a new life with someone they love dashing against the sorrow of seeing your little girl all grown up and maybe becoming a little further from your arms as a consequence. As I say, I can only imagine at this stage. I am in no rush to go through that myself!
This conflict of emotions was so evident in this mum's face. I saw her approaching her daughter after the ceremony and waited for this moment to unfold ...
It was a great privilege for me to recently be one of the wedding photographers in Raleigh asked to provide a few of my photos for Duke Chapel's new wedding website. Given that there are just twelve wedding photographs total in the set, to have two of my images selected and be featured amongst some of the area's most established photographers was a real honour.
With three more weddings booked at Duke already this year, I'm looking forward to working in what is one of my favourite venues again soon! Watch this space!!
At the end of March, I got together with Cassie and John for a walk around downtown Raleigh for their engagement photography session. We met up at The Oxford, had a couple of drinks and headed out into the city to find the light as the sun was setting.
As always, I tried to do things a little differently from my previous shoots in the area so we mixed things up a bit by shooting solely with prime lenses. Invariably, the fixed focal length forces you to see things differently and this case was no exception. It makes you think a bit more about your composition, which means more work, but that's definitely a good thing. A goo ...

Last month, I had the immense pleasure of taking care of Jessica and Bo's wedding photography at the gorgeous Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill, NC. I say immense pleasure as it truly was a fantastic day where I got to work with a lovely couple, surrounded by their closest friends ...
This week's image of the bride getting her make-up done offers a nice contrast to my last post and comes from a wedding I photographed last weekend at The Carolina Inn just down the road in Chapel Hill.
If you've read my blog before, you may well be aware that I really don't like to direct the wedding day at all, but just let it happen and focus on documenting it honestly. With this image, however, I did provide a little bit of direction in order to get the most from the environment we were in. What was the direction? I closed the other blinds in the room and moved the chair 90 degrees and to the side so the bride was lit with some beautif ...
One of my favourite wedding photographs from last season is this image from Lisa and Mark's Raleigh wedding last September. Lisa and Mark were a really lovely couple to work with as they were really into just letting me do my thing and not really at all concerned with stopping to get staged photographs of the bridal party together. Instead, they just let the day happen and the images simply document the story of their day.
One of the unique things about their wedding day was that the bride was in one hotel room getting hair and make-up done with her girls whilst in the room right next door, the boys were chilling out watching a game of fo ...
Back in the autumn, I met up with Tara and Seth in Chapel Hill for their engagement session. You can see we were blessed with great light and had a fab time. I'm looking forward to photographing their Brier Creek Country Club wedding next year!
This week's image is an example of what can be done in 5 minutes when you've taken the time to scout out the location in advance. In this case, we had just a few minutes after the November ceremony at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Raleigh to take some quick pictures of the bride and groom. I'd taken the time to head out the day before to check out the lighting at that time and had noticed that there was an area across the road from the church that would provide a nice backdrop of autumn colours and light at that time of day. We would have been quite limited in terms of our options for wedding photography had we stayed in the immediat ...

One of my favourite places for wedding photography in Raleigh is the beautiful Sacred Heart Cathedral downtown. So I was very much looking forward to finishing up my 2012 wedding season with Kimberly and Mike's marriage there with the reception to follow at Second Empire, just a block or so down the street.
I met up with Kimberly, her mum, grandma and bridesmaids at the salon, Alter EGO, in ...
OK, so the "Image of the Week" thing got a bit beyond me in 2012. I will endeavour to do better in 2013! I know I get a lot of feedback from people when I post these, so thanks to everyone for their comments. I'm glad people other than myself get something out of it!
Not your typical wedding photograph this, but one that jumped out at me when editing a recent wedding and which appeals to me specifically because it is a bit different. Sometimes, I feel that as wedding photographers, we run the risk of getting stuck in a rut of trotting out of the same cookie-cutter images time and time again. It's a fine line we walk between pleasing our cl ...
With the season over for us Raleigh wedding photographers, I'm already looking forward to what 2013 has to offer! First up will be Jessica and Bo, whose Carolina Inn wedding I will be shooting in a few weeks. Their Chapel Hill engagement session took place one grey Sunday morning in November, where we met at the Carolina Inn, had a leisurely brunch at the Carolina Coffee Shop where we had a chat and got to know each other a little better, and then headed out to take pictures around the area.
It was a fun-packed and eventful session where we laughed, cried and I got ambushed by a rather large and playful Irish red setter. What can I say? We ...
Firstly, I'd like to start off by wishing everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year! It's gone by so fast, but 2012 was a fantastic year for Joe Payne Photography with some truly gorgeous weddings for me to cover. With ceremonies and receptions at beautiful venues across North Carolina from Lake Lure to the Carolina Inn and Duke Chapel, a whole host of fantastic couples, and a number of awards it really was a great 12 months indeed. So it was really nice to end the year on a high note by winning the Wedding Photographic Society's "Photographer of the Year" award for 2012.
For those who do not know about the WPS, it's a network of pr ...
